I feel like I’m supposed to answer ‘smart’, since that is the one that goes against the gender stereotype, portrays “inner beauty”, etc. However, the truth is that I would much, much rather be called pretty, and I’ll tell you why.
“You're smart” isn't a compliment, at least not in my world. People don't actually know if I'm smart. They just assume that I am since I seldom talk. I don't often share my grades or accomplishments, because I’m never actually as smart as they randomly decided I was.
Once, back in primary school, I came back from an extended vacation to find a sheet of paper in my desk drawer. On it was 28 lines of different handwriting. I read it.
-olivia, i think u r nice, polite, and smart
-you are really smart and nice and you get good grades
-I think you are really good at math, and your smart, and your good at drawing
A friend told me that the boys had decided to make fun of my appearance while I was away. The teacher wasn't pleased and had them each write 3 compliments as compensation for their insults. Apparently, they all sat down for 20 minutes, and every kid came up with ‘nice’, ‘smart’, and ‘smart’ again.
‘Smart’ is a word that can be used to describe anyone, but you will be made fun of if you call an ugly person ‘pretty’. There was a Special Ed Student in that class as well. People always told her that she was smart. It was one of the things that she could understand and she would get really happy. It was a sad sight.

I would rather be very smart because intelligence takes a big part in life where being handsome/cute just looks and when you get older the intelligence is going to stick where the looks are not.
