(a) Esters are sweet-smelling substances and are used in making perfumes. Describe an activity for the preparation of an ester with the help of a well labelled diagram. Write an equation for the chemical reaction involved in the formation of the ester. Also write the names of all the substances involved in the process of esterification.
(b) State any two uses of esters.

Explanation:

(a) Preparation of an ester

  • Take test tube and pour ethanol (1 ml) and also glacial acetic acid (1 ml) .Add a small amount of conc. sulphuric acid (catalyst) in the same test tube.
  • Now, heat the mixture at about 60°C for almost 15 minutes.
  • After heating, pour the mixture of the test tube into a small  beaker which is filled with about 50 ml water.
  • The product formed is ester( smells sweet)

Chemical equation :-

CH_{3}COOH + CH_{3}CH_{2}OH + Conc. H_{2}SO_{4} -> CH_{3}COOCH_{2} CH_{3} + H_{2}O
