(a) Explain why Rutherford selected a gold foil for his alpha
particle scattering experiment.

Answer:
A) Ernest Rutherford was interested in knowing how the electrons are arranged within an atom. Rutherford designed an experiment for this. In this experiment, fast moving alpha (α)-particles were made to fall on a thin gold foil. He selected a gold foil because he wanted as thin a layer as possible.
B) He observed that most of the alpha rays that were passed through the thin gold foil passed through it without showing any deflection which led him to the conclusion that most of the space in an atom is empty.(Correct option is 2)
