(a) A convex lens is curved outwardly, causing the light to pass through it, and converging or concentrating to a point. Think of a magnifying glass used for burning it. The light going through it is focusing to a point, and this concentration is being used to burn things. See the diagram attached below.

(b) The main axis is defined as an imaginary line that passes through the optical center and the curvature center of both lens faces, and is perpendicular to the faces.

Focus is a point on the main axis, where all the rays parallel to the main axis cross after lens refraction.

The focal length can be defined as the distance from the lens main focus to the optical centre.
