That is to say the farmer does 1/10th of the work in a day while his wife does 1/8th of the work.
Together they do (8+10)/(10*8) = 18/80 or 9/40th of the work.
So, the two together will harvest the field in 40/9 days or 4 and 4/9th of a day, that is less than 4.5 days.
