Number of heads = number of animals

A chicken has 2 legs and a cow has 4.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let the number of chicken be x

The number of cows will be 9 - x

There is a total of 24 legs:

2x + 4(9-x) =24

2x + 36 - 4x = 24

2x = 12

x = 6

Find the number of animals:

chickens = x = 6

cows = 9 - x = 9 - 6 = 3

Answer: There are 6 chickens and 3 cows
