A farmer has five haystacks in one field and four haystacks in another.
How many haystacks whould he have if he combined them all in one field ?

This depends entirely on how one disambiguate the word “combined.” If you mean that it was the haystacks that were combined, then the people who answered “one big haystack” are correct. If, on the other hand, you mean that the fields were combined (say by removing the fence between them) then the people say “there would still be nine” are correct.
