Qᴜᴇsᴛɪᴏɴ :-

A farmer prepares a rectangular vegetable garden of area 180 sq metres. With 39 metres of barbed wire, he can fence the three sides of the garden, leaving one of the longer sides unfenced. Find the dimensions of the garden.

Gɪᴠᴇɴ :-

  • Area of vegetable garden = 180 sq metres
  • Farmer barbed wire with 39 metres

Tᴏ Fɪɴᴅ :-

  • Dimensions of the garden

Sᴏʟᴜᴛɪᴏɴ :-

Let the length = x m

area = length × width

width = 180/x m

➳ 180/x + 180/x + x = 39

➳ 180+180+x²/x = 39

➳ 360 + x² = 39x

➳ x² - 39x + 360 = 0

➳ x² - 24x - 15x + 360 = 0

➳ x(x - 24) - 15 (x - 24) = 0

➳ (x - 15) (x - 24) = 0

➳ x - 15 = 0 x - 24 = 0

➳ x = 15m x = 24m

Length = 15, 24

Width = 180/15 , 180/24

= 12, 7.5

Hence,

  • 1st pair 15, 12 metres
  • 2nd pair 24, 7.5 metres
