Step-by-step explanation:

The father's age is 42, son's age is 9 years.

we need the no. of years after which the son's age will be one fourth the father's age.

let it be 'x' years

son's age = 9+x

father's age = 42+x

since son's age is one fourth of father's age,

9+x = (42+x)/4

4(9+x) = 42+x

36+4x=42+x

4x-x=42-36

3x=6

x=2

Verification:

9+2=11

42+2=44

44/4=11

hence verified.
