In the beginning of the story, Kezia had been afraid of her father and used to stammer in front of him. She even got a punishment from her father when she used to speech for the Port Authority to make a pin cushion for him, unaware of its importance to him. But as the story proceeds, we get to know that the girl sees from the fence Mr. MacDonald and his children, playing and laughing together. This made her understand that there are different kinds of fathers. One night, when she was put to sleep and she got up late at night, having seen a nightmare, the girl sees her father standing by her bed. Then when he comforts her and instead, goes to sleep himself, Kezia realizes that her father may not be so bad after all. In the end, she confesses ger love for her father by saying that he has a big heart.
