Given:

A father in his will give 2 by 5 of his property each of his son and daughter and rest to his servant.

To find:

The fraction of the property he gave to the servant.

Solution:

Let the total property of the father be 1.

So,

according to the question,

He gave 2/5 of his property each to his son and daughter and the rest to his servant.

So,

Total property = property given to son + property given to daughter + property given to the servant

Now,

The fraction of property he gave to his son and daughter is

 =  (\frac{2}{5}  \times 1) +  (\frac{2}{5}  \times 1)

 =  \frac{2}{5}  +  \frac{2}{5}

 =  \frac{4}{5}

So,

The fraction of the property he gave to his servant

 = \:  total \: property \:  - property \: given \: to \: son \: and \: daughter

 = 1 -  \frac{4}{5}

On taking 5 as LCM, we get

 =  \frac{5 - 4}{5}

 =  \frac{1}{5}

Hence, the fraction of the property he gave to the servant is 1/5.
