Define x:

Let the son be x years old

Father = x + 30 years old

Express their age in 12 years time:

Son = x + 12

Father = x + 30 + 12 = x + 42

Solve x:

Given that the man will be 3x as old as his son:

x + 42 = 3(x + 12)

x + 42 = 3x + 36

2z = 6

x = 3

Find their present age:

Son = x = 3 years old

Father = x + 30 = 33 years old

Answer: The son is 3 years old and the father is 33 years old.

Let the son's age = X

Father's age = X+30

After 12 years

Son's age = X+12

Father's age = X+30+12

According to the question

X+30+12 = 3(X+12)

X+42 = 3x+36

3x - x = 42 - 36

2x = 6

X = 6/2 = 3

X = 3.

 \bold {Answer}

Son's age = 3 years

Father's age X+30 = 3+30 = 33 years .
