Let daughter's age be x years and that of father's be y years.

Case 1:-

When father is 40 year older than his daughter:-

y=x+40

or x-y=-40

Case2:-

When the sum of their ages is 50:-

x+y=50

From Case1 and2, we get:

x-y=-40

x+y=50

Adding them we get,

x=5 years

Substitute the value of x in Case1, we get,

y=45 years

Hence, Daughter's age is 5 years and father's age is 45 years.

Hope it helps
