✪ Question ✪

A father is 6 times as old as his daughter. After 4 years, he will only be 4 times as old as his daughter. What are their present ages?

✪ Given ✪

  • A father is 6 times as old as his daughter.
  • After 4 years, he will be 4 times as old as his daughter.

✪ To find ✪

Their present ages.

✪ Solution ✪

Let daughter's age be x yrs.

So, father's age = 6x yrs.

After 4 years,

Daughter's age = (x + 4) yrs

Father's age = (6x + 4) yrs

According to condition,

(6x + 4) = 4(x + 4)

↝6x + 4 = 4x + 16

↝6x - 4x = 16 - 4

↝2x = 12

↝x = 12/2

↝x = 6

✪ Hence ✪

x = 6

Daughter's present age = x yrs = 6 yrs

Father's present age = 6x yrs

= (6 × 6) yrs

= 36 yrs

✪ Therefore ✪

Their present ages are 6 years and 36 years respectively.

-------------------------------------------------------------

✪ Verification ✪

(6x + 4) = 4(x + 4)

↝(36 + 4) = 4(6 + 4)

↝40 = 24 + 16

↝40 = 40

So, L.H.S = R.H.S.

Hence, verified.
