after twelve years, his age will be twice as that of his son then. find their present ages.
----------
Equations:
f = 3s
f+12 = 2(s+12)
----
Substitute for "f" and solve for "s":
3s+12 = 2s+24
s = 12 yrs (the son's age)
----
Solve for "f":
f = 3s
f = 3*12 = 36 yrs (the father's age)

Heya !!!

Let present age of son be X years.

Then the age of father = 3X years.

After 12 years age of son = ( X +12)

After 12 years age of father = ( 3X + 12)

According to question,

Age of father after 12 years = 2 ( Age of son after 12 years)

3X + 12 = 2 ( X + 12)

3X + 12 = 2X + 24

3X - 2X = 24-12

X = 12

Age of son = X = 12 years

and,

Age or father = 3X = 3×12 = 36 years.
