Given :

• Father is three times as old as his son.

• In 12 years time he will be twice as old as his son.

To find :

• Present age of father and son

Solution :

Let us assume the present age son be x years.

→ Fathers age = 3(Age of son)

→ Father's age = 3(x)

→ Father's age = 3x

Their age after 12 years :- [Add 12 years to the ages of father and his son.]

→ Son's age = x + 12 years

→ Father's age = 3x + 12 years

According to the question,

→ Father's age = 2(Age of son)

→ 3x + 12 = 2(x + 12)

→ 3x + 12 = 2x + 24

→ 3x - 2x = 24 - 12

→ x = 12

→ The value of x = 12 years

Substituting the value of x in the ages we've assumed :-

→ Son's age = x = 12 years

→ Father's age = 3x

→ Father's age = 3(12)

→ Father's age = 36 years

Therefore, the age of father is 36 years and the age of his son is 12 years.

Answer → Option (4) :-

Father : 36 years, Son : 12 years
