Consider the present age of son be x.

Consider the present age of father be y.

Given that father age is three times that of son.

That is, y = 3x

Also in 12 years time fathers age will be twice of the son's present age.

That is, y + 12 = 2 ( x + 12 )

Substitute y = 3x in the above equation.

3x + 12 = 2 (x + 12)

3x + 12 = 2x + 24

3x - 2x = 24 - 12

x = 12

y = 3x = 3*12 = 36

Sum of the present ages of father and son = x + y = 12 + 36 = 48 years
