As given sum of their age is 48

Therefore. X+y= 48

But it was also given that father age is thrice the child age therefore

X= 3y

Put this in x+y=48

We get

3y+y=48

On solving we get y=12

Now substitute this value of y in equation x+y=48

On substituting we get

x+12=48

On solving we get

X=36

Which is father age.
