So letting S represent son’s age, D representing dad’s age,

D(birth)=S

D(now)=S+S

D(now)=2S

38=2S

S=19

Therefore 5 years ago, the son’s age was 14

Let us assume that when son was born, father's age was x years and son's age was 0 years.

Now, according to father:-

Son's age is x years, which means that father has also grown x years.Now he is 2x years old.

Father is now x years older than his son.

Father's present age=38 years.

ATQ:-

38-x=x

38=x+x

38=2x

38/2=x

19=x

So the present age of son is 19 years.

His age five years back was (19-5) years
=14 years.
