let son's current age be x

when son's was born father's age was x years

father's age today is 38

father's age when son was born + son's current age = 38

so, x + x = 38

2x = 38

x = 38/2 = 19 years

so, son's age today is 19 years.

son's age 5 years back was 19 - 5 = 14 years.

Let us assume that when son was born, father's age was x years and son's age was 0 years.

Now, according to father:-

Son's age is x years, which means that father has also grown x years.Now he is 2x years old.

Father is now x years older than his son.

Father's present age=38 years.

ATQ:-

38-x=x

38=x+x

38=2x

38/2=x

19=x

So the present age of son is 19 years.

His age five years back was (19-5) years
=14 years.
