Given,

A father was \[21\]years older than his son three years back.

At present, the father is \[4\] times as old as his son.

Solution,

Assume that the present age of father and son be \[x\,{\rm{and}}\,y\] respectively.

Therefore,

\[ \Rightarrow x = 4y - - - - \left( 1 \right)\]

So,

\[\begin{array}{l} \Rightarrow \left( {x - 3} \right) - 21 = y - 3\\ \Rightarrow x - 24 = y - 3\end{array}\]

Apply equation (1),

\[\begin{array}{l} \Rightarrow 4y - 24 = y - 3\\ \Rightarrow 4y - y = 24 - 3\\ \Rightarrow 3y = 21\\ \Rightarrow y = 7\end{array}\]

Therefore, the age of the son after five years

\[\begin{array}{l} \Rightarrow 7 + 5\\ \Rightarrow 12\end{array}\]

Hence, the age of the son after five years is \[12.\]
