Step-by-step explanation:

Given A few days back when Peter was suffering from ſever, he was taken to his uncle's clinic, which was 6 km towards the right of his house. But his uncle was not available at the clinic, so he was taken to the hospital which was 12 km towards the  left from the clinic. The doctor prescribed him a medicine and he went to the chemist shop which was 1 km towards the  left of the hospital If Peter's house was south facing, then what was the minimum distance which he had to cover to come  back to his house from the chemist's shop?

  • Assume Peter’s house is at point P. So let the clinic of his uncle is at point Q.
  • So PQ = 6 km
  • So let the hospital is at point R and the chemist shop is at S.
  • So we have
  • QR = 12 km and RS = 1 km
  • The minimum distance he had to cover to reach his house is PS
  • So now draw a perpendicular line ST.
  • So PT = PQ – TQ
  •     PT = 6 – 1
  •           = 5
  • So by Pythagoras theorem from triangle PST we get
  • PS^2 = 12^2 + 5^2
  •         = 144 + 25
  •         = 169
  • Or PS = √169
  • Or PS = 13 km
  • Therefore was the minimum distance which he had to cover to come
  • back to his house from the chemist's shop is 13 km.
