The simple permanent tissue, Parenchyma acts as a packing tissue because they fill the spaces between other tissues to maintain the shape.

Features:

  • They are living tissue.
  • Most of them are unspecialised.
  • They can be in any shape like oval, round, cylindrical etc. with large intercellular spaces.
  • The cell wall is thin and rich in cellulose.
  • They have a prominent nucleus with a large central vacuole because they are meant for storage mostly.

Functions:

  • They store food, water & minerals.
  • They help in lateral conduction also.
  • They protects and maintains the shape of plant. Thy also check water loss from the plant.
  • A special parenchyma, chlorenchyma performs photosynthesis. Eg: The mesophyll cells.
