There are two kinds of comparative figures of speech . One is metaphor in which things are compared without using like or as.

For example:

Mary is a pig.

which means that Mary is dirty.

Whereas a simile is used to compare using like or as.

For example :

Mary is like a pig. or Mary is as dirty as a pig.
