Explanation:

If we consider, that the chasing plane  suppose opens fire with a machine gun. In this case, plane is expelling mass in forward direction so a force will appear in the opposite direction to the motion of bullet that will decrease the speed of plane each time he makes a shot.

Since, we know that, the engines are still active then the plane's speed will oscillate which means to and fro motion. And, as the thrust of the engines remains constant, but, the plane's mass decreases as after the cessation of the shots ,the speed  increases of the plane and it will be greater than the speed  which was before the shots.
