Given :  A fire engine, standing near a building, extends its ladder to a length of 10 metres to reach a certain window in the building.

To Find :  What is the height of the window from the ground?

Solution:

height of the window from the ground = 3 + vertical height from truck ( ladder base)

Horizontal Distance of window/ building from ladder base = 6 m

Ladder length = 10 m

Using Pythagorean theorem

vertical height from truck ( ladder base) = √10² - 6²

=  8 m

height of the window from the ground  = 3 + 8 = 11 m
