Boiling water will kill parasites and bacteria but actually make toxic chemicals (such as hard metals, chloramine and other contaminants) worse because they do not evaporate and become more concentrated. (Same amount of chemicals in a smaller volume of water)

Likely due to shock and stress on the fish. The better scenario would have been to mix some of your tank water with the fresh water you boiled and cooled.
