Given :  a fish lying at a distance of 2m below water surface observe a bird at distance 8 m vertically above itself.

To find : the actual distance between bird ans fish

Explanation:

a fish lying at a distance of 2m below water surface

Taking sea level as origin

Fish will be  at  - 2 m

a bird at distance 8 m vertically  above sea level

Bird position = 8 m

Distance = | Bird position - fish position |

= 8  - (-2)

= 8 + 2

= 10  m

Distance between  bird  & fish  =  10 m

Considering refraction ans 8 m height observed

then let day distance =  d m

above water = d - 2 m

Refractive index of water = 4/3

Observed distance =  Distance inside water + (4/3) Distance above water

=> 8  = 2 + (4/3)(d - 2)

=> 6 = (4/3)(d - 2)

=> 4.5 = d - 2

=> d = 6.5

Distance between fish & bird = 6.5 m
