Given : a flagstaff, 5m tall stands in a vertical pole . the angles of elevation of the top and bottom of the flagstaff from a poit on the ground is said to be 60⁰ and 30⁰ respectively.

To Find : height of the pole and the horizontal distance between the observer and the pole

Solution:

Height of Pole = P m

Then Flagstaff  top point height = P m

Flagstaff  bottom point height = P-5  m

Let say Observer Horizontal Distance = D  m

Tan 60  = P/D

=> √3 = P/D

=> D√3 = P

Tan 30 = (P - 5)/D

=> 1/√3  = (P - 5)

=> D/√3 =      P - 5

=> D√3 = 3(P - 5)

P  =  3(P - 5)

=> 2P  = 15

=> P = 7.5

height of the pole = 7.5 m

D√3 = P

=> D√3 = 7.5

=> D = 7.5/ √3

=> D = 2.5√3 m

horizontal distance between the observer and the pole = 4.33 m
