The epiglottis is a muscular flap in the pharynx, which covers the trachea during swallowing. The entrance to the oesophagus lies just behind the tracheal opening, thus without the activity of this flap, chewed food could enter the trachea and the lungs. The epiglottis flaps open during breathing, allowing the passage of air through the trachea. If food accidentally enters the trachea, (for example if one tries to talk while eating) the gag reflex is stimulated and choking occurs.
