length of the flour = 6m

width of the flour = 3m

area of the flour = L×B

                            = 6×3

                            = 18m∧2

length of the carpet = 3.5m

width of the carpet = am

area of the carpet = L×B

                                = 3.5×a

                                = 3.5a m∧2

area that is not carpeted = area of flour - area of carpet

                                           = 18-3.5a
