because electric current causes gas to ionise. these ions gain speed and collide with florescent material of tube causing glow

A flouresscent tube glows by ionizing mecury vapour in a glass tube.This causes the electrons in the the tube to emit photons at ultra violet frequency.The UV light can be coverted in to visible light by using phosphor coating.
