The common housefly, Musca domestica, lives in close association with people all
over the world (Fig. 6.1). The insects feed on human foodstuffs and wastes where
they can pick up and transport various disease agents. In addition to the housefly,
a number of other fly species have adapted to life in human settlements, where they
present similar problems. In warmer climates, the filth fly, M. sorbens is of particu-
lar interest in this regard. It is closely related to the housefly and considered
important in the spread of eye infections. Blowflies (Calliphoridae) and other flies
have been associated with the transmission of enteric infections.
