Given :

Applied force = 5N

Acceleration of block m₁ = 8m/s²

Acceleration of block m₂ = 24m/s²

To Find :

Acceleration of the combined mass.

Solution :

❖ First of all we need to find mass of each block.

As per newton's second law of motion, force is measured as the product of mass and acceleration.

Mathematically, F = m a

  • F denotes force
  • m denotes mass
  • a denotes acceleration

Mass of the first block :

➙ F = m₁ a₁

➙ 5 = m₁ × 8

m₁ = 5/8 kg

Mass of the second block :

➙ F = m₂ a₂

➙ 5 = m₂ × 24

m₂ = 5/24 kg

Now both blocks are tied together. Hence total mass will be (m₁ + m₂).

➠ F = (m₁ + m₂) a

➠ 5 = [5/8 + 5/24] × a

➠ 24 = (3 + 1) a

➠ a = 24/4

a = 6 m/s²

Acceleration of the combined mass is 6 m/s².
