A force f is applied on a square plate of side l. If the percentage error in the determination of l is 2% and that in f is 4%. What is the permissible error in pressure?

Answer:

We know that pressure is equal to force applied per unit area.

i,e P = F/A

F= force  and A= area

now area fo square plate will be L^2

P= F/(L^2)     eq(1)

we need to find ΔP / P , which is called maximum percentage error in pressure.

Doing simplepartial differentiation. we get delta P as,

ΔP = ΔF / (L^2) - (2F* ΔL)/ (L^3)      eq(2)

Now dividing eq(2) with eq (1) we get,

ΔP/P = ΔF/F   -  2ΔL/L

now given is ΔF/F = 4% and ΔL/L = 3%

so  ΔP/P = |4   -  2(3)|

this mean   ΔP/P = 2.

so maximum permisible error in measurement of pressure is 2%.
