Given :

Magnitude of applied force = 10N

Mass of body = 5kg

Time interval = 5s

To Find :

  • Impulse
  • Change in momentum
  • Change in velocity
  • Acceleration

Solution :

■ As per newton's second law of motion force is measured as the rate of change of linear momentum.

  • F = ∆p/∆t = m (v - u) / t

F denotes force

dp denotes change in momentum

t denotes time

m denotes mass

v denotes final velocity

u denotes initial velocity

A] Impulse of the force :

We know that, Impulse (J) = F × dt

➠ J = F × dt

➠ J = 10 × 5

J = 50 N s

B] Change in momentum :

As per second law of motion;

⭆ F = ∆p / ∆t

⭆ dp = F / ∆t = J

Change in momentum = 50 N s

C] Change in velocity :

⇒ ∆p = m × ∆v

⇒ 50 = 5 × ∆v

⇒ ∆v = 50/5

∆v = 10 m/s

D] Acceleration of object :

We know that acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity.

➙ a = ∆v / ∆t

➙ a = 10/5

a = 2 m/s²
