A force of 5n gives a mass m1 an acceleration of 10ms-1 and a mass m2 an acceleration of 20ms-1. What acceleration of 20ms-2. What acceleration would it give if both the masses were tied together

Hi,

FORCE = MASS X ACCELERATION

solving for mass m1

5 = m1 x 10

m1 = 5/10 = 0.5 kg

solving for mass m2

5 = m2 x 20

m2 = 5/20 = 0.25 kg

therefore,

               when the two blocks will be tied together( solving as a system)

total mass = m1 + m2 = 0.5 + 0.25 = 0.75 kg

ACCELERATION = TOTAL FORCE / TOTAL MASS (while solving as a system)

a = 5/0.75 = 6.67 m/s^2

THEREFORE acceleration = 6.67 m/s^2
