A force with magnitude 5 N is being applied on a box in the forward direction and another force of 8 N is being applied on the same box in the backward direction.
i) What is the resultant force acting on the box? Mention the direction of the resultant force too.
ii) Will the above set of forces be classified as balanced or unbalanced forces?

Answer:

The resultant force is 3N in backward direction.

Thhe above set of forces is unbalanced.

Explanation:  Consider motion in the forward direction

now anything in the forward direction will be considered to be positive and any force in the backward direction will be considered negative.

First force =  +5N

second force = -8N

resultant force = sum of all forces =  +5N  - 8N

=  -3N

so the resultant force in forward direction is -3N.

This means that the force in backward direction is 3N.

Balanced system of forces means resultant force = 0

But here resultant force \neq 0

so the system of forces above is unbalanced.
