if 1 is substracted from numerator fraction become 1/3

(x-1)/y=1/3

3(x-1)=y

3x-3=y

3x-y=3 ...(1)

x/(y+8)=1/4

4x=y+8

4x-y=8 ...(2)

3x-y=3

x=(y+3)/3
