This is because the Earth itself behaves as a magnet which causes a freely suspended magnet, to point always in a particular direction: North and South. The South Pole of the Earth's magnet is in geographical North because it attracts N.Pole of the suspended magnet and North pole of Earth's magnet is in geographical South as it attracts S.pole of suspended magnet.
