A freight train car of mass 50000 kg traveling at 20 m/s hits a stalled pickup truck of mass 2200 kg at rest on the tracks. What is the velocity of the train and car after impact if it is an inelastic collision?(Inelastic means they stick together and energy is not converted)

velocity of system of train and car would be 19.16 m/s .

given, mass of train, M = 50,000 Kg

speed of train, v = 20 m/s

mass of truck, m = 2,200 kg

there is no external force acting on the system of train and truck so linear momentum of system must be conserved.

initial linear momentum = final linear momentum

⇒Mv + m × 0 = (M + m)v'

⇒50000 × 20 = (50000 + 2200)v'

⇒ 10^6 = 52200v'

⇒v' = 19.157 m/s ≈ 19.16 m/s

hence, velocity of system of train and car would be 19.16 m/s
