So if he sells 40% of 'x' , the left apples would be 60% of 'x' .

Remaining apples are 420 which is 60%.

 \frac{60}{100}  =  \frac{420}{x}

Cross multiply

60x = 420 × 100

x = 42000÷ 60

x = 700

Therefore, initially he had 700 apples.
