Let fruit seller had x apples.

According to Question

 \sf \: x - 60\% \: \: of \: x = 220 \\ \\ \sf \rightarrow\: x - 60 \times \frac{x}{100} = 220 \\ \\ \sf \: \rightarrow \: x - 0.6x = 220 \\ \\ \sf \rightarrow \: 0.4x = 220 \\ \\ \sf \rightarrow \: x = \frac{220}{0.4} \\ \\ \sf \rightarrow \: x =550
