A fruit seller had some apples. He sells 20% apples and still has 300 apples. How many apples did he have originally?

• Let the total number of apples with the fruit seller be 'x'.


• Then, apples sold -

= 20% of total

= 20% of x

= 20/100 × x

= 20x/100

= x/5


• Now, apples remaining with him -

= total - apples sold

= x - x/5

= (5x - x)/5

= 4x/5



• But, according to the question, he has 300 apples remaining with him .

=> 4x/5 = 300

=> x = 300 × 5/4

=> x = 75 × 5

=> x = 375


• So, total number of apples with him = x = 375.
