Let the total number of apples be x

Given 40% are sold and 420 apples are left

That is 60% of apples = 420

Hence (60/100) × x = 420

∴x = 420 × (100/60) = 700

Thus there are a total of 700 apples with the fruit seller.

hope its help you

let the no. of apples be x

100 - 40 =60%

so, 60% of x =420
60/100x=420
3/5x=420
3x=420×5
3x=2100
X=2100/3
X=700

he had 700 apples

hope it helps
