Let the total number of apples be x

Given 40% are sold and 420 apples are left

That is 60% of apples = 420

Hence (60/100) × x = 420

∴x = 420 × (100/60) = 700

Thus there are a total of 700 apples with the fruit seller.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the total number of apples be x

No. of apples sold by him is 40x/100

Acc to the problem

40x/100 + 420 = x

2x/5 + 420 = x

420 = x - 2x/5

420 = 3x/5

x = 700

Total 700 apples were there originally.

Hope this helps you ☺️
