40%=sold apples

so, 100-40=60% remaining

60%=420 apples

420/60×100=700 apples

The number of apples he had originally was 700.

Given,

A fruit seller had some apples. He sells 40% of them and still has 420 apples.

To Find,

The number of apples he had originally.

Solution,

Let us assume that the total number of apples he had were x.

Now, according to the question after selling 40% of apples the fruit seller is left with 420 apples, which means he is now left with 60% of the fruits.

So,

x-40/100x = 420

60/100x = 420

6x = 4200

x = 700

Hence, the number of apples he had originally was 700.
