Let the total number of apples be x.

He sells 40% of them.

So, percentage of remaining apples

= (100-40)% = 60%.

60% of total apples = 420

According to condition,

60% of x = 420

or, 60/100×x = 420

or, 60x/100 = 420

or, 60x = 420×100

or, 60x = 42000

or, x = 42000/60

or, x = 700

Total apples = x = 700.

Hence, originally he had 700 apples.
