Given :  A galvanometer when connected in series with a high resistance R,

is converted to a voltmeter that can read up to 20 V.  Same

galvanometer is connected in series with a high resistance of 2R,

then the resulting voltmeter can read up to XV

To Find : Value of x

Solution:

V = Ig (R + G)

V = 20

=> 20 = Ig (R + G)

=> 20 = Ig  R  +  Ig  G

x = Ig (2R + G)

=> x =   2Ig  R  +  Ig  G

=> x = 2 (Ig  R  +  Ig  G) -  Ig  G

=> x = 2 (20) - Ig  G

=> x = 40 - Ig  G

if we ignore G  as its negligible as compared to high resistance

then x = 40

resulting voltmeter can read up to 40 V  ( assuming G negligible )
