A gas cylinder contains 370 g oxygen gas at 30 atm pressure
and 25°C. What mass of oxygen would escape if first the cylinder were heated to 75°C and then the valve were held open until gas pressure was 1 atm, the temperature being
maintained at 75°C?

Answer:

359.3 g

Explanation:

Volume is found from initial condition.

n = ( 370 ) ( 1 ) / 32 mol

n = 11.56 mol

Using Ideal gas equation :

P V = n R T

V = n R T / P

V = ( 11.56 × 0.0821 × 298 ) / 30

V = 9.43 L

Now final number of moles :

n = P V / R T

n =  ( 1 × 9.43 ) / ( 0.0821 × 348 )

n = 0.330 mol

Mass of oxygen left :

= > ( 0.330 × 32 )

= > 10.6 g

Mass of oxygen escaped :

= > Initial mass - Final mass

= > 370 - 10.6 g

= > 359.4 g

Therefore , mass of oxygen escape is 359.3 g
